{"id":877,"date":"2017-08-11T01:06:30","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T01:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.helpingstudents.com.ng\/?p=877"},"modified":"2020-12-09T10:39:51","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T10:39:51","slug":"english-language-exam-summary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hstutorial.com\/fr\/english-language-exam-summary\/","title":{"rendered":"English Language Exam Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is a Sentence?<\/h2>\n<p>A sentence can be defined as a group of words that expresses a complete thought which contains a subject and a predicate and is not by anyway part of any other grammatical construction.<\/p>\n<h3>Elements of a Sentence Structure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>S<\/strong> \u2013 Subject &#8211; Doer\/Responsible for a particular action in a sentence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>V<\/strong> \u2013 Verb &#8211; Action word\/Action that is present in the sentence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>O<\/strong> \u2013 Object &#8211; Receiver of the action described by the verb [Indirect &amp; Direct]<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 Compliment &#8211; Completes the meaning of a sentence [Subject &amp; Object Complement]<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong> \u2013 Adjunct &#8211; Performs the function of an adverb which adds meaning to the verb in a sentence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Types of Sentences<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>According to Form \/ Function<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>D<\/strong> \u2013 <u>Declarative Sentences:<\/u> They are used to make statements that are facts and asserts universal truth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I<\/strong> \u2013 <u>Imperative Sentences:<\/u> They are used to issue commands, directives and mild requests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I<\/strong> \u2013 <u>Interrogative Sentences<\/u>: They are used to ask questions, hence it interrogates and are categorized into the following;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Polar Questions:<\/strong> This elicits a Yes\/No answer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rhetorical Questions:<\/strong> Does not require an answer\/reply.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tag Questions:<\/strong> It may convey positive\/negative orientation depending on the context of the question.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WH Questions:<\/strong> These are questions that require information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>E<\/strong> \u2013 <u>Exclamatory Sentences:<\/u> Designed to express excitements, surprise, anger, etc. \u2026 and usually ends with the exclamation mark.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>According To Structure<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>S<\/strong> \u2013 Simple Sentence: They express just one main idea, the subject, and a verb\/predicate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 Complex Sentence: They express one main idea and one subordinate idea which cannot stand on its own to make a complete thought until it is attached to the main clause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 Compound Sentence: They express two main ideas\/Independent ideas and cannot accommodate a subordinate idea\/dependent clause, they are joined by coordinating conjunction or separated by a comma or semi-colon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<\/strong> \u2013 Compound-Complex Sentence: They express two main ideas and at least one subordinate idea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M<\/strong> \u2013 Multiple Sentence: They may consist of three or more main ideas and two or more subordinate ideas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>The main ideas are also known as Independent Ideas while Subordinate Ideas are also known as <strong>Dependent Ideas.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a Sentence?
