It involves a situation where there will be continuous mass production of identical units through a series or production process.<\/p>\n<p>According to <span class=\"waslinkname\">Wikipedia<\/span>, Process costing is an accounting methodology that traces and accumulates direct costs and allocates indirect costs of a manufacturing process. Costs are assigned to products, usually in a large batch, which might include an entire month&#8217;s production.<\/p>\n<h3>Industries Where Process Costing is Used\/Applied.<\/h3>\n<p>Process costing is normally used where production will move from one stage to another. Examples are;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Meat processing industries.<\/li>\n<li>Furniture processing industries.<\/li>\n<li>Chemical processing industries.<\/li>\n<li>Oil industries.<\/li>\n<li>Textile industries.<\/li>\n<li>Glass cutting industries.<\/li>\n<li>Papercutting industries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Features of Process Costing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Under process costing, there should be provision for wastage, damages, or evaporation.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate records should be kept for the cost centre and the cost unit.<\/li>\n<li>The cost of the unit chosen should be relevant to the production process.<\/li>\n<li>Under process costing, the end of a process is the beginning of another process.<\/li>\n<li>The output from the process is expected to be a single product. Sometimes, there could be a by-product of work in process.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate methods are always used in recording the overhead cost.<\/li>\n<li>Accurate records are always kept for the finished products or semi-finished product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Terminologies Under Process Costing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Normal loss.<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal loss.<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal gain.<\/li>\n<li>Scrap.<\/li>\n<li>Waste.<\/li>\n<li>Defective units.<\/li>\n<li>Spoilage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Normal Loss<\/h3>\n<p>This is also called <b>expected loss <\/b>in the production process. They are always provided for in the production budget and the normal loss is always sold using scrap value that will be provided by the management.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Causes of Normal Loss<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>The inefficiency of workers.<\/li>\n<li>Machine breakdown.<\/li>\n<li>Power failure.<\/li>\n<li>Industrial action (strike).<\/li>\n<li>Defective raw materials.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Abnormal Loss<\/h3>\n<p>This is also called an unexpected loss<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in the production process. They represent the losses that are deemed to be above the normal loss. An abnormal loss is difficult to be predicted hence they are not always provided for in the production budget. They are always valued using the value of the good unit.<\/p>\n<h3>Abnormal Gain<\/h3>\n<p>This is when the final output is greater than the expected output\/units.
